Adjustable dumbbells promise a full rack in one pair. After a month of daily use, here’s the honest trade-off between convenience and feel.
Why people buy them
A fixed rack from 5 to 50 lb means 10+ pairs and a lot of floor space. Adjustables (like Bowflex SelectTech or PowerBlock) give you the same range in a footprint the size of a shoebox.
What we found
- Speed of change. Dial models (Bowflex) take ~2 seconds per adjustment. Pin models (PowerBlock) are faster once you learn them. Plate-and-collar setups are the slowest and we don’t recommend them for circuits.
- Durability. PowerBlock’s welded steel core survives drops better than Bowflex’s plastic dial housing. If you train aggressively, PowerBlock wins.
- Feel. Fixed dumbbells still feel best mid-rep; adjustables are slightly bulkier at the wrist. For most lifters the difference is minor.
Comparison
| Model | Range | Change time | Durability | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bowflex SelectTech 552 | 5–52.5 lb | ~2s dial | Medium | ~$430 |
| PowerBlock Elite | 5–50 lb | ~1s pin | High | ~$400 |
| Nuobell 80 | 5–80 lb | ~1.5s | Medium | ~$550 |
FAQ
Can you drop them? Not like fixed bells. Dropping cracks the mechanism. Lower reps under control.
Worth it vs a rack? If space is tight or you’re a beginner-to-intermediate, yes. If you lift heavy (50+ lb) daily, a fixed rack lasts longer.
Verdict
For 90% of home lifters, PowerBlock Elite is the best balance of speed, durability, and price. Get Bowflex if you want the easiest dial and don’t drop weights.
